Military records can include physical descriptions, addresses and next of kin.
Where to look
- The National Archives holds many service and pension records
- World War I and II draft registration cards list millions of men, not just those who served
- Veterans' grave markers and headstone applications
- Local newspapers often reported enlistments and returns
Good to know
A 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center destroyed many Army and Air Force personnel files. Other records can sometimes be used to rebuild them.
