Guides / Getting started

Gather and organize family papers

Start with what's already in the house.

4 min read

Many families already have birth certificates, obituaries, letters and photos tucked away.

Look for

  • Birth, marriage and death certificates
  • Obituaries and funeral cards
  • Family Bibles and baby books
  • Military discharge papers
  • Letters, diaries and address books
  • Naturalization papers and passports

Organize

Make one folder per couple or family, and label everything with names and dates in pencil.
