Interview your relatives

The most valuable records aren't written down.

6 min read

Older relatives remember names, places and stories that no record holds. Ask while you can.

Good questions

  • Where and when were you born? Your parents?
  • What do you remember about your grandparents?
  • Where did the family live, and why did they move?
  • What jobs did people do?
  • Are there photos, letters or a family Bible?

Tips

  • Ask permission to record the conversation
  • Bring old photos to jog memories
  • Keep sessions short
  • Write up notes the same day
